What Separates Fundable Deep-Tech Founders

By SilverX Fund Investment Team

Before revenue exists, investing in deep-tech is an act of faith in people. The earliest deep-tech investment decisions are almost entirely founder assessments — not market analyses or financial models. Here is what the sharpest deep-tech investors are really looking for.

The Fundable Deep-Tech Founder Profile

  • Domain depth — 7–15 years of direct technical experience in the relevant field. Deep-tech cannot be faked; investors probe hard.
  • Intellectual humility — Awareness of what they don't know, and clear plans to fill those gaps through hiring, advisors, and partnerships.
  • Customer obsession before product-market fit — The best deep-tech founders spend as much time in the field with future customers as they do in the lab.
  • Regulatory literacy — Understanding the approval pathway for their technology is as important as understanding the technical pathway.
  • Capital efficiency mindset — Deep-tech is capital-intensive; founders who can extend runway through grants, government programs, and non-dilutive capital demonstrate resourcefulness.
